Kratom leaf is a herbal leaf from a tree of the Rubiaceae family and it is commonly known as Kratom. Its botanical name is Mitragyna speciosa. Mitragyna speciosa was the name given by a Dutch botanist Pieter Korthals. Kratom leaf grows in the tree as tall as 12 up to 30 feet. The color of the Kratom leaf is dark green and it can grow up to 7 inches long and 4 inches wide. The leaf has an oval shape with clustered yellow flowers. Naturally, the leaves fall and grow depending on the season. In the rainy season, Kratom leaf grows abundantly while during dry seasons, the leaves fall one by one. Kratom leaf has been widely used in South East Asia countries for centuries.

The use of Kratom leaf

Kratom leaf contains alkaloids including mitraphylline, mitragynine, and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These alkaloids substance can act as a mu-opioid receptor antagonist. The leaves are made into the powder which commonly known as Kratom powder that used by the therapist as an alternative to opiates for those who are suffering from opium addictive symptoms. When it comes to drug addiction, kratom is very useful in the rehabilitation process. The therapist starts using Kratom in a low dosage and then gradually decreasing until finally withdrawn. Kratom symptoms of withdrawal are milder compared to opium. Withdrawal symptoms from opiates can be very dangerous, thus Kratom which has similar substances with other opiates but having safer and milder withdrawal symptom becomes a good alternative choice. Other benefits of Kratom that you can get are as a stimulant, antidepressant, sexual enhancer to improve sexual activity, as a treatment for some illness and pain killer. Kratom can restore your energy, making you become active and stronger. Studies have proven that Kratom can also enhance one’s sleep quality, it can boost your mood and calm the mind. However, the recent studies said that kratom has the capacity to be abused.

Since a long time ago, the native people had consumed the Kratom leaf by chewed, smoked, and boiled as a tea. Though there are no official records said about the addiction to it, but the dependence is possible. Consuming Kratom leaf or kratom in low doses is nothing to worry, but ingesting higher dose regularly for a long time may give people undesirable results. It is because the human body can develop the tolerance against the alkaloids contain in mitragynine. It will create a need to increase the dose to achieve the desired effects. People with an overdose of Kratom will experience hallucinations, nausea, delusion, tremors, coordination problems and restlessness. Consuming kratom is not recommended for people who have several health problems such as having schizophrenia, cardiac, renal, ulcers, hepatic problems, low blood pressure and pregnant women.

Today, the health and medical world are giving their attention to the Kratom leaf. Several companies including scientific groups and pharmaceuticals have been conducting research to study the composition, properties, and effects of Kratom leaf in the human’s health. Due to its accessibility on the internet, a Kratom leaf in the form of Kratom powder had been widely available now on the market. Certain clinical studies in several countries in the world also still conducting further examination. Different countries have different laws that regulating the use of Kratom. Several countries such as Australia, Burma, Thailand, and Malaysia already banned the use of Kratom. In Thailand, Kratom is illegal, even possessing a small amount or dosage of kratom will be punishable by the laws. In Canada, kratom is not yet regulated. With the exception of those countries above, the use of Kratom powder and leaves as a herbal medicine is legal.
